You searched for “hastmaithun ke nuksan” because someone told you — a friend, a relative, a hakim, a WhatsApp forward, a YouTube “sexologist” — that masturbation is quietly destroying you. That it drains your strength, dries up your body, weakens your knees, thins your hair, and will leave you impotent and infertile by the time you marry.

Here is the medical truth, stated plainly: Normal hastmaithun has no physical nuksan. None. It does not cause weakness, hair loss, weak knees, erectile dysfunction, infertility, or shrink anything. The fear is real, but the harm is not.

Most of the suffering around masturbation in India is not caused by masturbation. It is caused by the guilt, anxiety, and quackery built on top of it. Let’s separate the myths from the science, and then deal honestly with the one nuance that is actually worth your attention.

Where the “nuksan” belief comes from

The idea that losing veerya (semen) makes a man weak is woven deep into Indian culture. It comes from a few sources stacked on top of each other.

In classical Ayurveda, semen (shukra dhatu) is described as the most refined of the body’s seven tissues — the final, most concentrated essence. The folk reasoning followed: “It takes 40 drops of blood to make one drop of semen, so losing semen is like losing blood.” That ratio is not biology. It is a metaphor that got mistaken for a fact. Semen is not distilled blood; it is mostly water, fructose, enzymes, zinc in tiny amounts, and sperm.

Layered on top is brahmacharya — the spiritual practice of restraint — and a colonial-era Western anxiety about “spermatorrhoea” that British medicine has long since abandoned but which fused with local beliefs and never left. The result is a uniquely strong cultural conviction that every ejaculation is a withdrawal from a fixed account.

It isn’t. Your body is not a bank balance of veerya. It is a factory that produces semen continuously, every single day, whether you use it or not.

The myths, debunked one by one

”Hastmaithun se kamzori aati hai” (causes weakness)

False. A single ejaculation releases about 1.5–5 ml of fluid — roughly a teaspoon — that is around 90% water and contains only 5–25 calories. That is less than one biscuit. Your testes produce sperm 24 hours a day and your prostate and seminal vesicles make fluid continuously. Losing a teaspoon of it depletes you about as much as spitting or sweating does.

If you feel tired or “down” after masturbating, the cause is almost always one of these: you did it instead of sleeping, you are stressed or eating badly, or — most commonly — the guilt and anxiety are draining you, not the act. We cover this in detail in does masturbation cause weakness.

”Baal jhad jaate hain” (causes hair loss)

False. Hair loss in men is overwhelmingly male-pattern baldness — a genetic and hormonal condition tied to DHT sensitivity in your hair follicles. It runs in families. It has zero connection to ejaculation. There is no mechanism by which losing seminal fluid could affect the follicles on your scalp, and no study has ever shown such a link.

”Ghutne kamzor ho jaate hain” (weakens the knees)

False, and there is no biological mechanism that could even make it plausible. Knee strength depends on muscle, cartilage, vitamin D, calcium, and physical activity. “Weak knees” as a symptom of semen loss is pure folk belief, often sold by the same practitioners who then prescribe an expensive “cure."

"ED ho jaata hai” (causes erectile dysfunction)

False. Erectile dysfunction has real, well-understood causes: diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, obesity, hormonal issues, certain medications, and psychological factors like performance anxiety and depression. Normal masturbation is not on that list.

There is one related caveat worth naming honestly: heavy use of porn — especially escalating or fast-paced content — can train arousal patterns that make real-sex erections harder for some men. That is a porn-and-conditioning issue, not a “semen loss” issue, and it is reversible. We cover it in porn and ED.

”Sperm count kam ho jaata hai / infertility”

False. Your body produces on the order of 100 million or more sperm every day — well over a thousand per second. You cannot “run out.” Frequent ejaculation can temporarily lower the count in each ejaculate, but production never stops and your long-term fertility is unaffected. The full breakdown is in masturbation and sperm count.

”Testosterone gir jaata hai / kam mardana”

False. Ejaculation causes only a brief, minor dip in testosterone that returns to baseline within hours — and this is true whether the ejaculation is from sex, masturbation, or a wet dream. Well-conducted research shows no meaningful long-term difference in testosterone between men who ejaculate regularly and those who abstain. Your testosterone is set by genetics, age, sleep, fitness, and body fat — not by masturbation.

The dhat and “mardana kamzori” trap

There is an entire industry in India built on these myths. Roadside “sexologists,” hakims, vaids, and online consultants will diagnose a perfectly healthy man with “dhat rog,” “excessive hastmaithun,” or “mardana kamzori” — conditions that are not real diseases in modern medicine — and then sell him months of expensive tonics, herbal courses, and “treatments” costing thousands of rupees.

The script is always the same: tell you you’re losing something precious, make it sound urgent, sell you a long course, then take credit when nothing bad happens (because nothing bad was ever going to happen). If you’ve paid one of these people, you weren’t treated. You were scammed. No tonic, churan, or capsule can fix a problem you never had.

The one honest nuance: when it actually is a problem

Reassurance is not the same as pretending there’s never any issue. So here is the truth, stated straight.

Masturbation becomes a problem in exactly two situations, and neither has anything to do with “nuksan” to your body.

1. When it becomes compulsive. If you cannot control the urge, if it’s eating into your work, study, or sleep, if you’re doing it even when you don’t enjoy it, if you keep trying to cut down and can’t, and it’s causing you real distress or hurting your relationships — that pattern is worth taking seriously. Doctors call this compulsive sexual behaviour, and the threshold (per ICD-11, code 6C72) is a persistent failure to control the urge over an extended period — typically six months or more — that causes real distress or genuinely impairs your work, relationships, or other important areas of life. The fix here is a psychologist or counsellor, not a hakim and not a “veerya-restoring” tonic. The problem is the loss of control, not the semen.

2. When porn-linked patterns affect real sex. If you’ve trained yourself on lots of porn and now find real intimacy less arousing, or struggle with erections during partnered sex, that’s a conditioning issue worth addressing. See porn and ED and our guide on when porn use is worth worrying about. Again — reversible, behavioural, not a sign your body is damaged.

For the overwhelming majority of men, neither of these applies. Masturbating a few times a week, or even daily, with no impact on your life, is completely normal and harmless.

Kill the guilt — that’s the real damage

Here is the part most articles skip. The single most documented harm connected to masturbation is not physical — it’s the guilt. Research has found that post-masturbation guilt is associated with anxiety and depression. Read that carefully: it’s the guilt that correlates with poor mental health, not the masturbation.

So if you’ve been lying awake worried that you’ve permanently weakened yourself, that the years of masturbation have ruined your future marriage, that you need to “recover” what you’ve lost — let it go. There is nothing to recover. You haven’t lost anything. The anxiety you’re carrying is the only thing actually hurting you, and it was installed by a culture that got this one thing wrong and an industry that profits from your fear. If the guilt feels heavy, our piece on masturbation guilt is written for exactly that.

If this guilt or anxiety is severe — affecting your sleep, mood, or making you feel hopeless — please talk to a doctor or counsellor. You can also reach Tele-MANAS on 14416 (India’s free national mental-health helpline) or iCall on 9152987821.

The short version

Normal hastmaithun se koi nuksan nahi hota. It does not cause weakness, hair loss, weak knees, ED, low testosterone, or infertility. Semen is produced continuously and replaced effortlessly — it is not a finite life force.

The only real problem is if masturbation becomes compulsive and damages your life, or if heavy porn use affects real sex — and both of those are behavioural issues you fix with a psychologist, not a tonic.

Everything else you’ve heard is myth, shame, or sales. Stop paying people to scare you. Fix your sleep, manage your stress, drop the guilt, and stop treating a normal bodily function like a disease.
